We want to see a world where humans understand the power they possess over their own health and well-being, and how magical life can be when health and vitality are chosen as top priority.
Our mission is to provide an example of how easy and delicious it is to eat from a health-focused perspective. We want everyone to understand how important it is to fuel their bodies with proper nutrition, and that their food choices today will make a difference to their long-term level of health.
The story of our cafe starts at the end of 2015, when Alastair and I made the decision to buy a food trailer and start our first business - Chia Health Food Co. This was a time in our lives when we were starting to understand that there was more to food than taste and sustenance, that it had a nutritional value which could deeply affect our level of health and well-being.
While Alastair worked on getting the trailer ready, we started brewing kombucha and stocking it in a few retail shops. Over the next year and a half we spent most weekends trading at various markets and sporting events, promoting our outlook of a healthier way of eating through the superfood smoothies, fresh fruit and vegetable juices, kombucha and other fermented products, and plant-based food that we offered.
We were often asked by customers where they could find us during the week, which led us to start looking for a spot to permanently set up our trailer. About 8 months after our first market we were approached by the owners of WERK, which was the venue of a popular food truck market we had been trading at. They told us they would be renovating a warehouse and were looking for a tenant to sell food from one of the spaces. Up until this point we hadn't considered a permanent premises without our trailer, but the idea was appealing as working from a trailer had it's limitations and the the fact that we could co-create how the space would look was exciting.
We decided to take the plunge and Baobab Juice and Smoothie Bar opened in January 2018. We were proud to be the first plant-based destination in our city. As with everything in life, change is a constant, and over the last few years our space has changed and expanded and so has our name, as we realised we were more than a juice and smoothie bar, and so Baobab Wholefood Cafe was born. Who knows where the next few changes will take us!
